Experience the Ratty

Do you like trains? Especially steam trains? A bit of history and some unrivalled scenery too? Well, you’re in luck! A little drive away unveils the wonderful location of Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway station in Ravenglass.

Ravenglass is the only coastal village within the Lake District National Park and it is home to what the locals lovingly call the ‘Ratty’.

You can board the beautiful steam train and go on a journey including seven stops to Boot Station, where you can have a nibble and a drink whilst they turn the train around in the traditional manner and reload the coal ready for the journey back.

The route takes in some of Wainwright’s favourite views such as the highest peaks of the Scafell Range.

Fact of the day: Some of the locals use this train as part of their daily commute too, so it’s not just a tourist attraction!

The drive from Ambleside to Ravenglass is a rewarding journey over Hard Knott and Wrynose but if the weather is particularly hazardous, you may want to find another route as the conditions on the tops can be dangerous in bad weather. On a good day though it is one of the most beautiful car journeys you are ever likely to take.

You will find adults and children all enjoying this traditional day out, and in true Cumbria style you can take your dog too if you have one. After all, they are part of the family too aren’t they?
